Week 8B: We are Visual.

Visual media will definitely work for Lion & The Cosmic Fish.  We want our music to paint a picture or tell a story, and visual media will help us do that.  Our music videos will be animated, or made like short films, and will go along with some of our music tracks.  The creative element will help attract more fans who appreciate the visual side to music, and could stir up more interest in our musical message as a whole.

The Gorillaz is a virtual band which uses animated characters as their band members.   They rely on a creative and interesting visual aspect for their music as well as visual content like music videos.  Each video tells a story or has a message that goes along with their music.  Their Instagram has 1.7 million followers, and their YouTube channel has 4.5 million subscribers.  All of their social media platforms have frequent engagement and plenty of visual media to capture fan's attentions.  One of their new music videos named "Tranz" had over 15 million views, over 500k likes, and about 50k comments.  This is a very well known musical group with a strong brand and large fan base.  They understand and utilize social media to connect to their fans and spread their creative musical message.  LCF can take inspiration from The Gorillaz' creative approach to music and art, and their large presence on social media.  The strong visual aspect and story lines along with their appealing, groovy music are good examples of what works in the music industry.

Grateful Dead is another band that utilized visual media to help spread their music and message.  The group used the same artists to design their logos and album artwork, which helped set them apart along with their psychedelic rock music.  If you are a fan or even have heard of the Grateful Dead, then you should know the Dead's bears and skull graphics.  Their artwork also stands out and inspires interest, and their poster art helped bring new people to their concerts and festivals.  This band did not have access to an online world or social media when they started, so word of mouth and direct marketing like posters were used.  The band is still touring, although without Jerry Garcia, and they now use social media to stay connected to old and new fans.  Their Instagram has 220k followers and posts about twice a week while on tour.  The last few posts have around 8k likes and 60 comments.  I would say they have less of a presence online because of being an older band with an older market.  However, there is growing interest in older music like the Grateful Dead by younger generations, so using a social media platform like Instagram helps this band stay with the times.  The Dead's YouTube presence is large, since there are so many live performances and versions of their songs.  This allows fans to see old shows and experience something they might not have been old enough to see.  LCF could emulate the consistent and interesting graphic art style of the Dead, and a strong logo is also important for us to be recognized.

Even though this artist produces a different genre of music than LCF, his online presence and fame is worth noting.  Drake is a successful hip-hop artist with over 16 million YouTube subscribers and almost 50 million Instagram followers.  His music video titled "God's Plan" has around 857 million views, so almost a billion!  Drake is using visual media to his advantage and reaching many fans across the world.  People are hearing his message and engaging with his content.  That same YouTube video has over 600k comments and millions of likes.  He is also using social media to spread his positive messages through music videos and other visual posts like professional photographs.  His tours are promoted and his music achievements are noted in many Instagram posts.  There are daily posts, and the last IG post had 1 million likes but only 60 comments.  The low comments could be due to no engagement when someone does comment, or they are limited by the label.  Drake produces good music which reaches a large audience due to his significant online presence, among other things.  His messages through his music and use of visual media connects with fans and pushes him into a top position in the industry.  LCF can take examples from the use of positive messages and visual representations to help attract more fans and connect on a deeper level.  The volume of Drake's online presence is also impressive and something worth looking at as a great example of the power of social media, and well crafted visual content.
